 George Canyon


GFC2The 36-acre Preserve located at the corner of Palos Verdes Drive North and Palos Verdes Drive East, and the center is operated jointly by the City of RHE and the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy. A nature trail passes through one of the most pristine and beautiful canyons on the peninsula, and the trail is one mile long with interpretive signs, guideposts, benches, viewing decks and a drinking fountain. The entrance to the trail has an Information Kiosk that visitors use to keep up on the many activities scheduled throughout the year. Visitors can walk or ride on horseback through the willow-riparian and coastal sage habitats, culminating with a spectacular view of the Los Angeles basin.

The Nature Center provides educational and recreational programs which invite the community to enjoy and learn more about the natural beauty and wildlife of George F Canyon. Inside the Nature Center are exhibits focusing on the local flora and fauna including live animals to observe up close. GFC1

Walking tours can be arranged for schools, scouts and other organized groups. The Birthday Party Safari is a unique and wonderful way to celebrate your child’s special day with a nature inspired atmosphere.

The Center is open to the public on Fridays 1-4 pm; and Saturdays & Sundays 10-4 pm.
The trail is open everyday from dawn until dusk.

Be a part of the Docent Program [PDF].  Volunteer docents will:

  • Greet and interact with visitors at the Center and on the trail
  • Answer basic questions about the Preserve, local nature or direct visitors to other resources
  • Assist with preparations for scout badges and birthday parties
  • Help with special event sand other activities
